 Hidden Spring Designs is the artistic collaboration of the husband and wife team of Rob Matthews and Leslie Guinan. Together they have been creating work for the wall, furniture and sculpture since 2002. They were brought together by serendipity and drawn together by a shared aesthetic and a love of fine craftsmanship. Rob had been a glass artist most of his life and was ready to leave the corporate world to focus on his new passion, combining glass with concrete. He moved to a tiny town outside of Nevada City, California. At about the same time, Leslie left her job as an environmental attorney to pursue her love of woodworking at the fine furniture program at the College of the Redwoods. A year later she moved to the same little town and bought the house next to Rob. The rest, as they say, is history, and that history is documented in the work they create. Their two and three dimensional pieces are vibrant collages that combine various materials to create a synergistic union. Throughout their work you will notice the use of many different materials, but the core foundation of it all is concrete. The intrinsic qualities of the materials embrace, complement, inspire and inform each other. Embedded materials provide warmth and vitality, the stone effect of the concrete adds cohesion and strength, while the images and colors of glass, wax, photographs or even found objects give animation and spirit to each piece. Much of the work is created on a commission basis, working closely with the client to create a piece that creates a mood or evokes an emotion. In the medical and hospitality industry work that has a serene and calming effect is often sought after. Hidden Spring Designs’ body of work that evokes the feeling of water with the use of blue water glass mirror (as shown here) is particularly appropriate in medical and therapeutic settings. These pieces are calming and peaceful. The unusual materials and effects invite investigation and contemplation, taking people's minds off their health problems for a few moments. Leslie and Rob are available for commission work. Both bring strong artisan work ethics, integrity and commitment to their art careers and their appreciation and gratitude for being able to work as artists shines in each piece.  |
