| As a kid I was always fascinated by the way things worked. To this day my mother still tells people: “If you couldn’t find any batteries or all the parts of the flashlight were gone, you just had to ask Steve, he’d have them.” Of course she was right. I had used the parts to make some weird night vision, strobe flashing, self-maneuvering type thing. I would take apart everything and sometimes I could put it back together! I’ve always had some proficiency in drawing and art, and went to college to study the fine arts and illustration. In a sculpting class I had an assignment to sculpt anything I wanted using clay. The kicker was to do it with my eyes closed. I sculpted a fish (I love fish) and it came out real nice. I received an A for my work and a recommendation from the teacher. He said, “You should forget the drawing stuff. Close your eyes and sculpt.” As an artist in “the real world,” art meant work and work meant keeping up with the times. By the early 90s I was spending most of my time behind a computer. I still managed to spend some time during the evenings or on weekends painting or sculpting. I’d dream of doing the art I wanted, and make a living at it. Well here I am forty-five and finally going after that dream. Through kinetic art and roller ball sculpture I’ve found a way to put that tinkering of my youth and my sense of art and design together. My materials are mostly steel and wood. Sculpting has never been this much fun, of course now I keep my eyes open, it’s a much safer way to weld.  |
